October 24, 2012by melissad

San Diego, CA- On October 20th, Local Property Management Company, FBS, and students from San Diego State’s Real Estate society participated in an exciting workshop. This special weekend class is known to many at SDSU, as the Day One program. Day One is a joint initiative between The Corky McMillan Center for Real Estate and The Real Estate Society of SDSU helping students connect classroom content to practical skills.

Day One consists of a series of workshops, held in the offices of various working professionals, where participants learn specific skills in the real estate realm.

FBS Property Management is celebrating over four decades of continuous property management operations in San Diego. FBS specializes in the management, leasing, maintenance and acquisition of properties for independent real estate clients. They are a weekly contributor in several news publications including the Union Tribune, where you can find their “Rent Sense” articles.

FBS was pleased to present an exciting look into the field of property management, an often overlooked specialty. Lucinda Garland, Vice President of FBS, CPM®, GRI® took this opportunity and love for teaching to engage the students in a brief, yet detailed examination of property management. The students were able to discover what tools are needed to be successful and to review and understand a client’s goals and investment objectives. As a group they performed a rental property analysis, developed a marketing plan to meet the client’s objective and reviewed marketing techniques to determine the best way to fill the vacancy. The discussion included rental criteria and details of underwriting a rental application. Students also came away with an understanding of the lease contract.

“I’m impressed with the potential energy and talent that could find its way into our industry with cooperative university programs like Day One” summarized Ms. Garland who is a board member for the local chapters of two of the most influential national trade organizations within the real estate industry; the National Apartment Association and the Institute of Real Estate Management.
“Thank you for an excellent Day One session on Saturday. The combination of the presentation, software access, example forms and problems gave the students a great introduction to property management.”- Michael Lea, Ph.D. Director for The Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate College of Business Administration at San Diego State University.

“Property Management is the heart of the Real Estate Industry.. it is all about taking good care of others…the information was outstanding, and I have kept the cutting edge resources for further reference.”- Student
