Make your rental feel like home

Make your rental feel like home: Simple ways to personalize your rental without losing your deposit

Renting doesn’t mean you have to live in a blank box until move-out day. A house starts to feel like *home* the moment you put a little of yourself into it — and the good news is, you can do that in plenty of ways that are totally reversible, totally safe, and totally deposit-friendly.

Here’s our take on the do’s, don’ts, and “check-with-us-firsts” of making your rental feel like your own.

Bring the Outside to Life

Landscaping is one of the easiest ways to add curb appeal and pride of ownership to your space.

  • Plant a garden. Flower beds, herb boxes, or a small vegetable patch can turn a plain yard into something you actually enjoy stepping into every day.
  • Add container plants. Potted plants on a porch or patio are a low-commitment way to add color without touching the ground at all.
  • Consider putting in grass if your yard is bare dirt or patchy. A healthy lawn makes a huge difference in how a property feels — just loop in your property manager first, since irrigation and drainage can affect the property long-term. Maybe the owner will even split if with you!

A quick tip: take photos before you start any yard project, and let your property manager know what you’re planning. It keeps everyone on the same page and protects you if questions come up later.

Change the Walls, Not the Structure

Blank walls don’t have to stay blank.

  • Removable wallpaper is a great option for adding pattern, texture, or a pop of color to a room — and it peels away cleanly when you move out.
  • Removable backsplash for the kitchen
  • Peel and stick flooring can transform a bathroom. Make sure you install properly and dont ruin original flooring.
  • Paint can completely transform a space. If you’d like to paint, just make sure you’re prepared to repaint the walls back to their original color before move-out. Keep a note (or a paint chip) of the original color so the touch-up is easy when the time comes. You might need approval first- so always ask!

Small, reversible changes like these let you express your style without creating extra work — for you or for us — down the road.

What to Always Leave to the Pros

Here’s the one hard line: **never touch anything electrical or plumbing.**

That means no DIY outlet swaps, no adding fixtures, no rerouting pipes, no “quick fixes” under the sink. These systems affect safety, code compliance, and the property’s long-term condition — and they’re exactly what our maintenance team is here for. If something needs attention, submit a request through the resident portal and we’ll take care of it.

A Few Ground Rules That Keep Everyone Happy
  • When in doubt, ask. A quick message to your property manager before a project can save a headache later.
  • Keep it reversible. The best personal touches are the ones that come off, come down, or repaint easily.
  • Document as you go. Photos of your projects (before and after) are your friend if questions ever come up.
Making your rental feel like home is in the details

At the end of the day, a house becomes a home through the little things — a garden you’re proud of, a wall that reflects your style, a space that feels like *yours*. We want you to enjoy your rental fully, and we’re always here to help you figure out what’s possible.

Have a project in mind? Reach out to your property manager — we’re happy to talk it through with you.
