Tips for Move In

If anyone had tips for move in it would be us! Moving into a new rental property can be stressful and exhilarating all at the same time. A fresh start, but lots to do.

Here are some tips to help make the Move In process smoother:
  1. Document the Property’s Condition: Before moving in, thoroughly inspect the property and document any existing damages or issues. Take photos or videos and make detailed notes. Share this information with the landlord or property manager to avoid potential disputes when moving out. Make a detailed inventory of the property’s contents, including furniture, appliances, and other items provided by the landlord. Take photographs or videos to document the condition of the property upon move-in.
  2. Review the Lease Agreement: Carefully read and understand the terms of the lease agreement. Pay attention to important details such as rent payment dates, maintenance responsibilities, pet policies, and any restrictions or rules specific to the property.
  3. Set Up Utilities and Services: Contact utility companies to set up services such as electricity, gas, water, internet, and cable. Make sure to transfer or set up accounts in your name, and keep track of important account information.
  4. Address Necessary Repairs: Report any maintenance or repair issues to the landlord or property manager promptly. This includes items that may have been missed during the initial inspection or any issues that arise after moving in. Prompt reporting can help ensure repairs are addressed in a timely manner.
  5. Be Patient: The property manager or landlord likely just spent a ton of money getting the property ready. So be patient when asking for repairs and how long they take.
  6. Familiarize Yourself with Emergency Procedures: Understand the property’s emergency procedures, including the location of fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and any other safety measures. Keep emergency contact numbers readily accessible.
  7. Get Renter’s Insurance: Consider obtaining renter’s insurance to protect your personal belongings in case of theft, damage, or other unforeseen events. Check with insurance providers for coverage options and choose a policy that suits your needs.
  8. Maintain Open Communication: Establish good communication with the landlord or property manager. Report any issues, pay rent on time, and follow any property rules or guidelines. This helps build a positive tenant-landlord relationship. Even let them know when you will be gone on extended trips! Be nice!

Remember, each rental situation may have specific requirements or considerations, so it’s important to review your lease agreement and communicate with the landlord or property manager for any specific guidelines or expectations. They are your ally in this, it does not have to be continuous.
